Annually, Indonesian Student Association of NTUST (NTUST-ISA) holds a special event to introduce Indonesia to Taiwanese people and preferably to NTUST local students. This even is what so called Indonesian Culture Exhibition (ICE). NTUST itself always shows positive response and full support to this event, considering that the number of Indonesian students in NTUST is the largest among all universities in Taiwan. Taking tagline The Hidden Treasure of Indonesia; ICE 2010, held on March 11 and 12, tried to give more information about cultures, natural resources, and Indonesian handicrafts making barely introduced before. ICE 2010 comprised of a full-day exhibition of Indonesian classic artifacts; such as Indonesian traditional house models and ethnic clothes; workshops to make Indonesian traditional basket (called bakul) using paper and make Indonesian fruit salad (known as rujak); and art performance night on the second day. Lots of visitors (mainly NTUST local students) were interested to join the workshops. Kevin Lin, Kane Zhen, Tony Wang, and Claire Wang, NTUST students of Chemical Engineering Department said they love the rujak sauce because it is sweet and delicious. They even asked the recipe so they can make it by themselves at home. Visitors also could play several Indonesian traditional games, e.g. bakiak racing (bakiak is a long slipper made from wood, used by 3-5 people), putting pencil into the bottle, sack racing, and cipai (Taiwanese fried chicken pie) competition. Some Vietnamese and Russian students joined the games, and they all were having fun! This year, in accordance to the election of New 7 Wonders of the World (Nature category) in which Indonesia’s Komodo Island becomes one of the finalists; ICE 2010 provided a spot designed for the purpose Vote for Komodo, where visitors can vote for their seven favorite finalists, including Komodo Island. This activity was fully supported by the Indonesian Ministry of Culture and Tourism. ICE 2010 logo also bears the Komodo as a part of introducing Komodo as one of Indonesian assets and an important animal to be protected since its number is decreasing as time goes. In the end of March 12, an art performance night was held. The concept was a story in which Indonesian student in NTUST guided his friends, a Taiwanese and a Bangladeshi when they were visiting Indonesia. In the story, Heri Prasetyo, Kevin Lin, and Shakil visited Indonesia starting from Sumatra Island to Papua Island. Traditional dances from each island were performed well by Indonesian students in NTUST. Among the dances were Bedhayan Dance, Dayak Dance, Tifa Dance, Pendet, and Papua Dance. Moreover, Indonesian Overseas Chinese Association (IOCA) also performed classic dance Kicir-kicir and famous Indonesian song Cucak Rawa. Some Indonesian students also sang several folk songs in medley format. Professor Jhy-Chern Liu of Chemical Engineering Department watched the performance till it finished, and said that every dance performed was awesome. He traveled to Indonesia a lot and really likes Indonesian culture, and even more always tries to visit ICE each year. In his speech, NTUST President Professor Shi-Shuenn Chen delivered his greatest appreciation toward Indonesian students in NTUST for giving ‘colors’ in part of NTUST internationalization. Recently, NTUST’s international students come from more than 30 countries in the world, with Indonesia as the largest international students’ population in campus. President Chen also hopes that in the next coming year, a similar event can be held to encourage cultural change between Indonesia and Taiwan. The Head of Indonesian Economic and Trade Office to Taipei, Mr. Suhartono also delivered a similar speech. He underlined the point that maintaining a good relationship between Indonesia and Taiwan really helps in the improvement of research and development. Audiences gave great applauses along the performance night. This year, in order to present an unforgettable performance, ICE 2010 committee invited Mr. Danang Pamungkas and Ms. Dewi Galuh Sinta Sari to train all the dancers. They both are professional dancers. With their training, no wonder most of the audiences like the performance a lot. Totally, around 900 visitors came to the two-day exhibition and the performance night. They are NTUST local students, international students, staff and professors, and also some students from universities around Taipei.
