NTUST-Indonesian Student Association (NTUST-ISA) held its first Chinese Language class for its members that were participated by more than 20 Indonesian students. This class was held in the meeting room of NTUST’s 1st dormitory, from 19.00 to 21.00. “This number of student was more than I expected to be”, said Hengky Kurniawan, coordinator of this event from Academic Division of NTUST-ISA. Not only considering the number of participating student, the learning atmosphere was really “high”. During whole class, everyone showed their eagerness in learning Chinese Language and participating actively in the course. It makes learning Chinese that many persons thought to be serious and difficult become more interesting and enjoyable.

This Chinese class was specially designed for new students to get used to Taiwan living environment, not for academic purpose. “In this class, we are more focused on learning practical Chinese for daily activities, such as buying foods, bargaining things, asking for help, and many others, so that new Indonesian students will be able to adapt with Taiwan condition soon”, said Ivan Arista, one of the instructor. To ensure that every student has enough time to practice, there was also another instructor, Wili Li, who will also be responsible for this class during the whole semester.

After the first introductory class finished successfully, most of the participants said that they were willing to attend the next classes. “Two hours seem to be very fast, I still want to continue learning, but the time is over”, said Louise Adrina, one of Indonesian student who just came on 2009, fall semester. Considering this high enthusiasm of NTUST-ISA members, NTUST-ISA surely will continue this program. We will hold the class regularly, every Sunday, 7 to 9 pm., at the NTUST 1st dormitory meeting room. If you are interested to join us, don’t hesitate! Everyone is invited, for free~

In it is a common academic phenomenon that freshly graduate bachelors can directly continue to doctorate level. In some countries, anyone with outstanding academic records and flawless recommendation applying to the fast-track program can be considered -- no matter from which country he/she comes from--, but here in Taiwan, a bachelor can only jump to doctorate program in the SAME university as his/her undergraduate study.

National Taiwan University of Science and Technology also applies the same rule, as it is policy of the Ministry of Education of Taiwan. However, overseas bachelor students -- who did not graduate from NTUST--  wishing to get promoted to doctorate level also can apply for a fast-track program, after they spend the first year as a master student.

The procedure of transferring from Master program to PhD program is as follows --as mentioned in the Guideline for Fast-Track Transfer to PhD Program released by Section of Graduate Studies Office of Academic Affairs--:

Who Are Eligible to Apply?

1. Final year undergraduate students with outstanding academic records and research potential.

2. Master degree students with outstanding academic records and research potential.

*The standard of outstanding academic records indicates the students who rank in the top 15% of class for undergraduate or top 30% for master students, or having passed the qualifying examinations. The applicants also have to submit at least two recommendation letters from at least assistant professors in the related department.
